Applications Now Open – Ki te Ara Whakamua

Whānau and communities across Aotearoa are invited to apply for the latest round of the Māori Community Action Fund, a kaupapa designed to support Māori-led solutions that reduce alcohol and other drug (AOD) harm.

The fund is administered by Te Rau Ora through Whare Tukutuku – the National Māori Addiction Centre, guided by the vision: “Kia tika te wā; kia tika te wāhi; kia tika te tangata; kia ora te whānau” – with the right time, the right place, and the right people, whānau can thrive.

Why this matters?
Through ongoing kōrero and insights, Whare Tukutuku has confirmed the urgent need for new, culturally grounded approaches to AOD care for Māori. The first three rounds of Ki te Ara Whakamua have already supported innovative kaupapa, empowering whānau and hapori Māori to lead change in ways that celebrate Māori identity and strengthen community wellbeing.

Tracey Potiki, Kaiwhakahaere of Whare Tukutuku, says the fund is about shifting the narrative of AOD care – focusing on mana, culture, and whānau strengths rather than negative stereotypes. This mahi directly responds to Te Wai Taramea Māori Alcohol and Other Drug Workforce Report 2024, which emphasised the ongoing need for enhanced and varied care options across Aotearoa.
