Te Rau Ora announces the launch of the Mason Durie Pae Ora Scholarship

Te Rau Ora is proud to announce the launch of the Mason Durie Pae Ora Scholarship. This new scholarship acknowledges and recognises the significant leadership and contributions that Mason Durie has given to Māori health, Māori development, indigeneity and Māori futures over many years.

Tā Mason Durie (ONZ, KNZM, FRSNZ, FRANZCP) is a rangatira whose work has transformed how Aotearoa understands pae ora. Tā Mason’s groundbreaking Te Whare Tapa Whā model fundamentally reshaped public health. He was a key figure in the establishment of Te Rau Matatini, (rebranded in 2019 as Te Rau Ora) and held the role of Senior Advisor until 2023.

The Mason Durie Pae Ora Scholarship reflects Tā Mason’s belief that leadership is a shared enterprise rather than a dependence on one person alone and that, by working together, communities can develop and enact plans based on their own aspirations of pae ora. Valued at $20,000, this prestigious scholarship is open to current or future leaders who are in tertiary study and are aspiring to work in roles across mental health, addiction and allied health.

Tā Mason’s vision of Pae Ora – a future where Māori individuals and whānau thrive across all dimensions of wellbeing – continues to guide and inspire. This scholarship is a way to honour Tā Mason’s leadership, and for emerging Māori scholars to continue his aspirations, exploring new ways to uplift hauora Māori, and strengthen the wellbeing of hapori Māori.
