Kia Tapa Tahi draws from personal experiences in the alcohol and other drug (AOD) space. The project takes a two-pronged approach to address this issue. Firstly, it aims to support and nurture the tuakiritanga (Māori identity and values) of tamariki who have been raised by caregivers and parents affected by substance abuse. By providing targeted assistance and development opportunities, it seeks to empower these tamariki to cultivate a strong sense of self and cultural heritage. Additionally, it aims to support whānau and kaumātua who have made the conscious decision to support their tamariki, rather than allowing them to enter the Oranga Tamariki system. It recognises the importance of preserving family unity and offer comprehensive support to these caregivers as they navigate the challenges of caring for children affected by AOD issues, by adopting a holistic approach.
Kia Tapa Tahi aims to make a lasting impact on the lives of tamariki and their families, promoting well-being, cultural resilience, and stronger whānau connections. By investing in the community, the cycle of substance abuse can be broken and a brighter future for our tamariki created.
