Awhi Whānau Roopu are a self-supporting Roopu of Tangata Māori, who have been going strong for the last 20 months, since inception. They are unfunded and rely on contributions, collected on a weekly koha basis, and low-key fundraising initiatives for bigger kaupapa, when needed. The primary focus is providing a safe space for Tangata Māori in recovery living in Tauranga to gather, and support each other through waiata/karakia/pepeha/whakawhanaungatanga/noho marae/pōkaiwhenua, and supporting other national Māori recovery kaupapa. Any support given is much appreciated.
The secondary focus is on Tūhonohono – connection to culture, connection to whenua, connection to reo, connection to hinengaro, connection to wairua, connection to ngākau, connection to self, connection to whānau, connection to hapū, connection to marae, connection to iwi, connection to te ao Māori.
Connection is the opposite of addiction.
Awhi Whānau Roopu has only provided one NGO an in-service about our Roopu, as they have not promoted the kaupapa, and only ever worked from a word-of-mouth public relations policy. They are an open-door kaupapa and invite people to come along and see for themselves if this is something they want to do.
