This program aims to address AOD issues in the rural, isolated community of Matakana Island by reconnecting whānau with their cultural heritage and traditional Māori healing practices.
The initiative will combine modern evidence-based AOD treatment approaches with traditional Māori healing methods, creating a holistic and culturally responsive program. Whānau will engage in wānanga focused on AOD education, relapse prevention, and life skills development. These sessions will be complemented by cultural activities such as whakapapa exploration, Te Reo Māori classes, and traditional arts and crafts.
A key component of the program will be the establishment of a Rangatahi Advisory Group, empowering young people to take leadership roles in addressing AOD issues within their community. This group will work alongside experienced practitioners to develop peer support networks and youth-led prevention strategies.
The initiative will also incorporate outdoor activities and environmental stewardship projects, fostering a sense of connection to the whenua and promoting physical and mental well-being. By blending clinical expertise with cultural wisdom, “Whakapapa Wellness” aims to create a sustainable, community-driven approach to AOD prevention and treatment that resonates with our Māori community and promotes long-term recovery and hauora.
